Hi Dominic,

It is a nice capture.

However, using a Canon 500mm F/4 L lens with a matched 1.4X extender at F/8 results in one thing, reducing the definition capability of such a fine lens.

I own and have tested formally in my optical lab facility all the big glass made by Nikon and Canon. Without exception, these lens were deigned to be used wide open, and produced the best image quality when properly set. I have used  all my lens in the field, and each one remains on F/4, F/2.8 or F/2 prior to using any extender if I do so.

TC or not, the image is tack sharp and shows no noticeable reduction in IQ.
