Jaws doesn't break very often, and when it does it's usually 20+ foot waves.

The unusual thing about this January 4th break, was that surfers were

paddling into the waves. More often, they are towed in by jet ski's. This

surfer has a long drop into the wave.

Hi Dominick!

This photo is fantastic, you are a lucky man to have the oportunity to see such a big wave with someone surfing!...

About the photo itself, the colours are bright and sharp, it's a must!

Recently I found also the feeling to make some surf photos, but I couldn´t found yet such a blue and big wave!! You may see some of them at: http://photo.net/photodb/folder?folder_id=1023105

Regards!

Thanks guys.  Joao, the luminous blue is due, in part, to the transparency of the wave.  It'a actually quite thin, being held up by a strong off-shore wind as evidenced by the white water being blown back.

That's the kind of wave I look for on Thanksgiving and all I got was even less than what we have here in Huntington Beach. :-) Nice, keep them comming Dom. !

Steve, Tm J, thanks for the comments.  You guys are some of my favorite bird photographers and encouraged me with birds.  Same gear for surf, and we're having a slow year with birds.  Aloha.

Wow, what a shot Dominick! Fantastic detail and colour! The ACTION is so well captured. Your description of this wave is so interesting. Last evening I saw the actor Gerald Butler interviewed on "Leno" and he was in a 'near death' 'take down' by a wave while filming his newest movie (Mavericks and Men I think). Surfer movie, he wanted to include a scene about a 'double take down', where you are already down by a huge wave, can't recover and another one slams down on you while under, apparently it ended up happening in 'real life'. His description on TV was very  harrowing, something for the very BRAVE and 'addicted' to this awesome sport!

Very nice capture! Would be great in a magazine!

Kindest regards, Gail

Gail, if a surfer "wipes out" he will attempt to dive under the wave and below the turbulence of the water tumbling over him.  If he can pop out the back side of the wave and catch a breath of air before the next wave, all is good.  However, if the next wave is crashing down when he comes up for air, well, it's not fun.  I've experienced a complete loss of orientation, not knowing up from down, in waves much smaller than these.

Awesome shot, quite a wave and beautifully caught by you and him. Must be quite a rush to ride one that big. Very nice work. FS

Hi Dominic,

Technically ideal. Using the canon 500mm F4 L at F/4 fully develops the design goal of a high definition lens with excellent contrast and fine color correction across the entire scene.

Very well done.

After reviewing a few other images of yours that had f-stops that did not optimize the lens performance, I am pleased by what I see here.

Best Regards,  Mike

What a spectacular shot.....can't imagine what could make it better.  When we were in Hawaii we watched surfers at Ho'okipa Beach, but we saw nothing like this!  I'm a pretty adventurous person, but I'm afraid of the water because I'm not a great swimmer, so this is one sport you'll never catch me trying!  I'm in awe of the courage it takes to surf!

Wow. Takes me back when I was under for around 2 minutes - looking for the bottom in order to find up. Kinda-like being in a giant washing machine. Great surfer shots!
