robertbrown 1 Posted May 16, 2003 This was the first print I made with my new Durst Laborator 1000 enlarger. I was using a cheap, beaten up old enlarger before that had very little contrast control. The Durst is a beautifully designed machine, rock solid, smooth focussing, and in perfect alignment. I'm a happy man. I did a test print or two of this image, then did a final print which I lightly toned copper. Similar shot of this scene taken with Voigtlander and 15mm lens is also in this folder. I like this one better, my wife likes the other one. Thanks for any comments or suggestions. Link to comment
mediumformat 2 Posted May 16, 2003 I really like it -- great to see a real print from enlarger -- you did a nice job. The tonality is beautiful, but what drew me in to this photo was the wonderful texture of the Adobe. Link to comment
trevor_hopkins 0 Posted May 16, 2003 An eye-catching, strong graphic image. It's good to see one of these buildings photographed in b&w for a change, and the toning is very effective. Sunshine and a predominantly cloudy sky have certainly assisted the tonal balance of the pic, with complementary textures in both the building and sky. The only thing that bothers me a bit is the near wall on the right. Possibly the print toning is to blame, but the halo along the rim and patchy loss of texture produces an artificial effect rather like a tear in the print, separating that corner of the image from the rest. An unusual and visually ambiguous effect that could be exploited well with a different composition, but here I find it a little distracting. Otherwise, a fine pic. Link to comment
oliver_indra 0 Posted May 16, 2003 Great stuff! The overall range of different grays is brilliant. Link to comment
robertbrown 1 Posted May 16, 2003 Thanks for all of the positive feedback. Trevor, you're right about the bottom right corner--a lot of burning in. . . . I might try another print with either flashing or masking. Link to comment
maria_s. 1 Posted May 17, 2003 Wow Robert! this is splendid ... great toning, spotless (I wonder what paper did you use?). Link to comment
gasta 0 Posted May 19, 2003 After have seen this several times I must change my rating to 7/7. I like this very much. Link to comment
g1 0 Posted May 20, 2003 Great feeling of mood here Robert, with lovely tones and texture as everyone has pointed out. Is this a monument of some sort? It almost appears to have been sculpted by hand. What is an Adobe? I thought it was a software manufacturer! Link to comment
mg 0 Posted May 22, 2003 A fantastic shot, Robert. I just think the burning needs to be a bit more precise in some places. Regards. Link to comment
michael_toope 0 Posted May 23, 2003 Dramatic use of fore & rear ground, great subtlety of contrast. Link to comment
