Hi Pierre,

no, I wasn't flying low or suspended in thin air over this magnificent young bird when I took its portrait.

The down-to-earth truth is that I stood with two flat feet on the solid concrete walkway of Fort Desoto Gulf Pier, situated about 15 miles south, as the crow flies, from the American city of St. Petersburg, Florida.

On the pier, anglers stood fishing and regularly threw undersized fish they had caught back into the water.

The pelican, young but yet efficient as it was, just waited for those fishes to be thrown near it.

I stood about 15 feet above the water where it floated at a distance of about 10 feet from the edge of the pier.

I've attached a GoogleEarth image of the spot where it happened, indicated by a small red circle. My photo shooting direction: South.

Hope I've solved the mystery!

CHEERS
