The Canon lens that you used works so much better at 400mm F/5.6. (not stopped down)
DOF and exposure level were not factors to use F/10 either. A shutter speed of 1/1000 second at F/5.6 would have yielded an image with improved image characteristics.
In action photography, higher shutter speeds not only capture fast action better, but preserve the image quality of a lens when the f-ratio is set to the optimal performance level.
I have tested every Canon lens made, and own most of them, and your lens should be shot either wide open or one stop below that for each focal length selected.
