I noticed this scene one night recently, and was later inspired to capture it by a posting by S. Liu to the Nikon forum titled, "To Catch the Shadow." When I moved the glass back a little into the shadow, the light rings appeared in the darkness, and I liked the mix of shadow and light cast on the counter top.

Trying a little something different. I appreciate your critiques and

ratings of the result. Also, do you shoot the light in a scene, or

the shadow?

Good eye to see this one. Great shots are everywhere ... if we look for them.

I especially like the "rings". It could be a little sharper. Perhaps it is just the scan?

I agree it could be a little sharper. I wish I could blame the scan, but I used the old digicam for this one so that I could get it posted quickly. I need to get a tripod! "Making" a tripod just doesn't cut it at 1/3 second exposures. Perhaps I'll try it again with a tripod and the N80 stopped down to get everything razor sharp.

Brian,

A great and "genial" idea, here ! This very ordinary glass becomes a very interresting thing just with the play of the shadow and the light (and your eye, of course) Maybe it's subjective, but I like the soft focus for this theme. However, the glass and the shadow are too in the center (for me). I would like to see other pictures of this glass with different lightnings, places and "point de vue" in preserving your nice grey tone on the table. I like very much this photo.

I understand your frustration regarding clarity, and yes I think a tripod would be a good investment. Still, simple & original with an interesting lighting technique. Very good work Brian, Btw if this is useful to anyone, I just read how to create the copyright symbol in PS. Hold down "ALT" and press 0169. out of nowhere, but useful

I like this. The shadows and patterns of the shadows are intrigueing. Unlike the magic of the internet.

The character referred to as Alt 0169 are ansi characters. Google ansi for a list of them. For example: ansi characters Be sure to use the numeric pad (numbers on the far right) to input the data. Windows had a 'character' list somewhere in 'Accessories' or some such, but I no longer know where to find it.
