Hi Sam,

I have reviewed other images of birds shot at 300mm F/10, and you probably know what I am going to recommend..................F/5.6.

Besides getting  improved lens performance, your exposure becomes quicker, and/or the ISO setting can be reduced. All factors move in the right direction for a better finished image.

I'm glad to know that I am not the only one who Mike "hammers" to use our lens to maximum benefit. I have to say though, his advice has helped me "better" my images.

In tweaking this image in PS, there is far better plumage definition available, and a small amount of sharpening creates a lovely eye highlight.
