Beautiful model, attractive pose, wonderful B&W tones and a bit poor environment! Unlike before! I like all of it though! Some kind of perfection is present as always!

Best regards my friend!

Jobn Rowsell: that is an interesting comment, thank you.

I had a quick look at your portfolio in which I found 96 photos of dogs, mostly of the same two or three animals, photographed in pretty much the same way and in similar poses.  I guess one could well ask you where you feel you are going with that but it would not occur to me to criticize someone else's taste in subject matter or the way in which they photograph it. I love dogs personally and understand your attachment to them without comparing them to Volskwagen Beetles, though some more obvious similarities my exist. Maybe you could develop some tolerance for other people's tastes and artistic preferences also. After all, when we get bored, there are several tens of thousands other portfolios to look at on Photo net without writing rude or derogatory comments under any one of them.

Incidentally, I have 243 signed release forms, hence different models in my portfolio, I would like to imagine that many of them have something personal to express, hopefully some others that visit these pages from time to time may feel that too. I notice that there is not a single member of the female human species even marginally visible anywhere in your portfolio. Presuming that photography is your hobby, you should try photographing one of them, you may discover that it's fun and you enjoy the interaction.

Let me better explain my critique. It's about the photography.

You have developed a successful and obviously repeatable formula for shooting and processing some of your images. This is no small feat and you deserve the acclaim and accolades that you have received.

However, the same tonality, the same DOF, the same contrast.....what do you hope to gain from further critiques of this style on this forum?  You are making it about the models, not your photographic abilities. This is a photography forum, after all.

The Volkswagen Beetle is arguably the most successful automotive design to date. Brilliant.  But each unit that came down the production line did not warrant an independent critique, hence the analogy.

Your portfolio shows diversity and creativity; yet, you ask for critique of the same old, same old.  Elton John and Bernie Taupin successfully put new lyrics to  'Candle in the Wind' but how  many times can they do that and still be inspirational?

I have to give you credit, you treat your models equitably. It's like the bride that asks the wedding photographer to make her photos look just like another shoot, so the photographer hands her the album from the first bride and a bill.

John, I hope that you move beyond John Peri 1.0. You definitely have the talent and resources to do it. Your portfolio is testimony. I really look forward to John Peri's signature style  2.0, not more of John Peri 1.0.

By the way, I like taking photos of my dogs and my wife's garden. When I ask for critique, I do not belittle the critic.

Regards, John

Well John, on the one hand you say that my portfolio shows diversity and creativity, on the other that it is all the same, which I find rather difficult to understand.

Notwithstanding, contrary to what you also write, I feel that my images have evolved considerably from the time when I posted the earlier shots in each folder and I hope the process will continue, and that is due in major part to the critiques that I continue to receive on PN when people take the trouble to point out not only what is wrong but how to do it better. Some like Tore Nilsson who just commented on my last entry on PN have gone to extraordinary lengths by writing to me at home and giving me detailed methodology with references to follow, for which I am eternally grateful. Many of my images have been influenced by his astute advice and that of others like him.

That said, I do not think that any artist should attempt to justify his approach, nor should he be subjected to being told that he should do it differently in style or purpose. Even explaining it in part as I do below I consider borderline, being one of the indignities one is subjected to in a public forum.

When one specializes in photographing flowers or insects, as so many do, are they making it about "them" rather than photography as you claim? And what about portraiture, does it cease to be about photography? I resent that remark which I consider totally unfounded, photography is a record of experience and all of us have a personal contribution to make, it is in fact in essence the opening statement of my front page written several years ago.

Alike dogs, possibly more so some may feel (sic), humans show a lot of variation in behavior and expression. What I do is to try and capture some of it, hence the quote regarding so many different models. The technique may often be the same, it is within the limits of my capacity after all, but the subject matter/model varies. Some may find it interesting others not, I respect that fully. This is my hobby, an escape from a world not far removed from your own, and I am having fun. Many of my models have fun also as may be evident to some in the photography, in fact it is an important part of what I try to capture in its infinite charm and variation. If you feel it is a contribution to photography, that's great, if not, as I already said move on, but that is what I do and I do it to the best of my hobbyist's ability. I will continue to post work for critique and seek help.

As for belittling the critique John, your single line comment was caustic, bordering on the offensive in both content and intent, and it made no attempt at "constructive" criticism which is the only purpose of the exercise when sincere. I answered you with humour and restraint, and I do insist on the fact that women bear no resemblance to motor cars which is what irritated the most one of my models that read your remark. Critique, alike perception, is a two way process and I agree that one should accept it so.

A fine image, John. I am especially impressed by the capture of skin shading and texture in this B&W shot. Well lit and well executed. I never tire of looking at your work.

Damn, ain't P Nut FUN! Love the flaming notes to the dog man I do... My theory is that there are some people put on the planet for the rest of us to feel superior to. To my mind those who shoot kids and dogs would be among them.

But I digress... Love this one my friend, marvelously erotic and yes... FUN!
Cheers, Raymond
