Never really thought about it, but tail braking sounds perfectly reasonable. I know ducks put their wings up for air drag to slow them down. Image illustrates why they are such great swimmers, just look at that equipment.

Thanks Dora! You comment remind me of what my friend told me about his son ... they were in a restaurant and his kid told  him (my friend) ... Dad, I don't know what it is but I want to eat what the guy next to us eat. :-)

 Thanks Kenneth! It was a cloudy day and I barely got enough good light to get this one. It turns out well for a Cormorant shot (all that dark coat).
