This young girl is similar to one of the dolls behind glass.

But the dolls live in a world of luxury. And this girl lives in a real and not a very luxurious life.

Ths young Russian women, now somewhat older, has facial coloring almost of porcelain and extremely naturally blonde hair which matches much of what is depicted by the dolls.  In her own way, she can be a 'doll' hence the caption (title).

But there is a difference; this woman is extremely smart and highly educated with substantial spirit and the others are just figures -- representations of the ideal she has become.

In fact, since this woman did not have a monetary richness growing up, she was not rich in the traditional sense, but with her intelligence and her great prsonality, she has her own richness.  For all their beauty, the dolls, background, are just dolls.  She never, I think, had dolls lke those, and instead grew to be her own 'doll'.
