Taking a sound suggestion from my mentor and friend (Mike) I left the 2x in the car and did my "stealth act" once again to track down this chap.

I couldn't get any close than before, so the in-camera image is obviously smaller and I needed to crop to achieve this presentation. I am rather pleased with it.

Grayhan,

Welcome to the world of higher definition imaging. Nice shot with very good results.

Now, you need to try an aperture settings to F/2.8, too.

The 70-200 mm zoom can be used above F/6.3 for improved definition, too. If your working distance was 30 feet away then at F/2.8 , the DOF would not be severely impacted by the environment that this bird is found in. Then you can also try shots at F/2.8 to F/5.6.

For your information, this lens has peak performance design goal  between F/2.8 and F/5.6. This is straight from my lab test report files.

Best Regards,  Mike

Thank you for your recent message, it reminded me to come and see what I've been missing.........A whole lot by the looks of things.

You have every right to feel pleased with this one, the warm light is really attractive on the birds plumage, and the sharpness and details are superb, hard work pays dividends.

Sincere Compliments !

Alf

It's about time you returned to Planet PN (smiles).

Always nice to have you visit. Thanks so much for your kind remarks.

I think we, as photographers tend to forget how much we put in to getting the image we want. There is a lot of time (and money), effort, forethought and knowledge that goes into a good image..... an image that can be "dismissed" by so many as "ordinary".

I will not forget my time with these Herons. They gave me a run for my money yet I enjoyed the challenge.

Thanks for stopping by.........

Best regards
