My initial reaction when viewed small is beautiful colours and tranquil settings.

My next reaction once viewing larger is maybe its a bit busy, and maybe a fraction too vibrant.

So to break it down the location and subject choice is certainly wonderful. Although regarding the subject matter I feel there are two distinct subjects which might conrtribute to the busy feeling i get. The two subjects being the foreground rock with solitary sapling and the waters edge being one subject matter and the other subject being the background trees, the reflection and interesting sky. I think in this instance they may have a stronger result if shot as seperate subjects. Just my opinion.

Also to me the colours look overly vibrant. For me I would back them off a touch as they almost burn the eyes a bit.

Like i said though a simply wonderful location, I hope you had the chance to shoot many different perspectives while you were there. If not and you have the chance then go back and take more :-)

Very good composition. The red tree on the foreground really attract my eyes.  Good reflection.  Best Regards,

Interesting shot with vivid (almost unreal) colors. Nice capture on the reflections. How did you post process this?  I am not sure why it feels right but is almost too much.

First of all I would  like to thank you very much for a very constructive comment in enough detail to give me food for thought. On a scene like this where I spent about 4 hours, I tried many different compositions (there is another one in this folder) and it is difficult to avoid what you would consider 'busy'. I have had a look at your images and i can understand why you might say that - personal preferences might be a factor.

I will actually try reducing the vibrancy of the color but it would not truly represent what I saw. Living in Quebec Canada and having fairly easy access to New Hampshire and Vermont, I get to see very colorful leaves during the fall. If you have a small shrub with colorful leaves with early or late sunshine, walk around it slowly and completely and you will be amazed how the color vibrancy changes especially when it is back or side lit. These leaves with side/backlighting were very vibrant. Of course, differences in our monitor might be a factor.

re shooting different subjects - you will see one in this folder without the foreground green and red shrubs. perhaps you can give me an opinion on that one which would be appreciated.

Thanks again for offering such a detailed comment and all the best.

Wanghan, Michael - glad you liked this image and mentioned the the attraction of the red.

Charles - thanks for the comment. I have detailed a response to Marty re 'vibrancy'.

Hi Tony,

I agree that the busy v simplicity nature of a photograph can certainly be a matter of taste.

I also understand that the trees in Autumn in Canada can be very vibrant in colour and I have witnessed it myslef when living in Alberta a few years ago. I do like your second version better with the vibrancy turned down a bit. To me it looks more realistic. Having said that I weren't there of course so your eyes are going to be thebest judge of that.

My monitor is calibrated but again you are correct in that we may be seeing the colours differently.

I'll be sure to have a look at the other image in your folder from that day.

Interesting comment concerning the vibrancy of this image, I suggest this is a matter of taste, if you had first uploaded the second image then you may have received comments suggesting that you give the colours a slight boost of vibrancy.  I really like the level of detail in this image and your pleasing well balanced composition.  I think you made good choices with this image.

A lovely, tranquil, scene, superbly photographed Tony! The brilliant orange of the foreground plant certainly attracts the eye initially, but there is much to view here. My eyes wander through the textures, and details of the rocks, then on to the beautiful reflections on the water, up to the opposing shore and it's accompanying fall foliage, and finally on to the, soft, dreamy, sky.  The only thing I can say I'd do differently is placing the bright orange foliage in the very low right corner. That'd start the eye in the correct location. I can see that you wanted to include the interesting striped rock in the lower right, but it's interest is overpowered by that nuclear, orange, glow from the plant.

All the best,
Neil
