timzeipekis 5 Posted November 9, 2011 A b&w rendition of a previous post. Your thoughts are welcome! Thanks! Link to comment
gsphotoguy 3 Posted November 10, 2011 I like the high drama portrayed here, Tim. With the triangle shape of the land, the centered horizon works well. Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted December 1, 2011 Not sure if you're looking for a comparison of the two, but that's how I'll approach it. I think black and white for this scene has more potential. It just seems more photogenic to me in b/w and I'm not sure I can put my finger on why. That being said, I prefer the feel of your color version for a few reasons and think if the black and white could capture in its own way some qualities like that it would be awesome. There's a natural and sensual softness to the color version that I miss in the black and white which seems sharper to me, somewhat harshly sharp, IMO. The other thing I notice is that the b/w conversion seems to lose some of the delicate sense of lighting in the sky. That patch of light above the far left-hand trees doesn't seem as luminous in the b/w version, so the energy isn't there for me. And in the color version, I feel more like I'm seeing through the first layer of clouds. There's a sense of layering and translucence that I'm not feeling as much in the b/w sky. Also, in the b/w, the area on the right behind the almost bare tall trees feels quite bright. That area of the color photo has a more organic feel. I guess that's it, I think the black and white would be incredibly effective if it could capture the overall more organic quality of the color version, letting the lyricism of the b/w shine through. I think that's it. It's an incredibly lyrical photo you've got here! Link to comment
timzeipekis 5 Posted December 7, 2011 The color version appeals to me more for the very reasons you mention. The differences may be in my approach to processing. The color version was finished with mood in mind whereas in the b&w version, I focused more on technical aesthetics (blacks, whites, and grays). I think this results in a less "emotional" photograph, but something that can be enjoyed tonally. Although quietly, I have been watching your work and have enjoyed your "Andy" series, anonymously. ;-) Link to comment
