Mark, you have chosen very interesting subject matter. There is such character in the white clapboards, the weathered surface of the porch
and of course the chair. I very much like the way you incorporated the shadow into the photograph. However, I have a problem with the photograph.

Looking at your gallery you obviously are an accomplished photographer but you seem very loose with your backgrounds. Which prompts more of a question rather than a critique.

I question why you positioned the dark chair against a dark and busy background that seems to add little to the photograph when the white
clapboards of the house were so readily available.

It seems to me the story is in the four elements, the chair, the shadow, the house and the porch. The trees, the distant building add little to the story and what does not add to the story detracts from the image.

Gary - Thank you for your well though out critique. I appreciate your comment and hope to learn from it.

I walked around this chair for a while and did try to photograph it from other angles. I didn't feel the composition was strong enough until I was able to frame the chair in this position and have the shadow included as shown. I also liked the way the straight lines all became diagonals. I agree the background is a bit distracting which is why I selected the depth-of-field and focal point as I did. Since this is a recreation in process, I did not feel it was right to move the chair. I was also concerned it would fall apart.

-Mark
