I have tried the painterly effect on a number of my photos. Sometimes the result is good, other times not so much. I think your effort in this area was well done, but as you say, paintings are generally only appreciated by the client. This being a photography website, commenters and critics are certainly going to be hard on this type of alteration.

As for this photo, I think it is very well done. It is evocative of a quiet, gentle feeling. Your model is attractive and pleasant, and her smile draws one into the image. I think the photo stands well on its own.
