This slightly desaturated version appears more 'honest' to me for some reason... Your other more saturated version (& which might please a larger crowd, no doubt...) has a softer and more 'pleasant' overall feeling, although almost feels as if the kids were posing for a holiday picture... The image above conveys a much harsher mood and feels therefore more effective, imo -- Have you tried converting the photo to B&W at all..?  Sweet looking boys, wonder what they're off to in life....    Best,Marjolein

Marjolein, thanks for the critique. This desaturated version is as it came out of the camera, wherein I have created a custom picture control with higher contrast and very low saturation. The saturated one I have converted in Capture NX 2 to "standard" picture control. Thanks for your feedback, I  myself like this desaturaed one as it coveys some harsh realities. I also have a BW version with some sepia touch which I am uploading now. Please give your feedback.
