After living in Bakersfield for over four years, I have been meaning to catch this cross at sunrise or sunset, but never have committed to it. This morning at around 6:20 pacific time, almost 10 years to the hour after the horrific events of 9/11, this is where I found myself. Symbolic? Well, it is meaningful for sure. This is considered a sacred spot for many of the people who live in Arvin. I think it means alot that over the years, no one has insisted that this cross be removed. Perhaps it is private property. My guess is it is part of Tejon Ranch. I do know this. This beacon of faith makes a compelling composition, especially with the soft, pastel dawn light coming across the southern Sierra!

Mark, I am always impressed by the beautiful soft light that you get in so many of your images. This is a fine example. I could just sit and soak it in.

Thanks Jeff and Richard! In late summer, the landscape here is completely parched and the grasses have become brittle and light yellow. The early morning light seems to work well with the grasses and barren hills. Honestly, the photograph can not convey the true sensation of the actual scene!

A meaningful, symbolic, image that can stand as a classic on it's own merits. Superb work Mark! Love the soft lighting, and the cross silhouetted against the sky. The setting with the dry, and desolate, landscape only serve to draw attention to the cross, and lovely lighting.

All the best,
Neil

Love this image.  I know the area and you have captured it extremely well.  I love the magenta cast to the scene and the mixture of blues..  The composition is great and it is very sharp.  All in all a wonderful image and though i have been in this area before you have really captured the vast expanse and loneliness of the place.  Great job.

Mark, this is a great image, not only because of the heavy symbolism, but because of the way you captured the early light so perfectly.
