Hardhearted? Self-involved?  Truly in need?  Interpretations abound.  The strong contrast lends to the harshness of the subject matter.

The slight desaturation and dark tones in your photo really enhance the scene of pathos depicted here... The (absence of) interaction of the 3 main subjects in the image (and the prominence and alignment of the trash can) is striking, and captured at exactly the right moment, imo.

Wonderful `street`scene - those in society who have to beg in the middle of apparent riches. I watched the Soloist movie recently and it ended saying that there over 90,000 homeless in California and probably not related to the housing market scandal.  (6)

Although the social statement comes through, you're composition which is strongly linear - almost surreally so - across the foreground, overwhelms the intended message in a way, by giving each of the foreground figures, including the trash receptacle, equal weight. I think the compositional aspects work better here than the storytelling ones..
