Please view larger. There is a flock of ducks in the air that really made this exciting for me. They are to the left of the rainbow lightly above the middle of the frame. Thanks.

Linda,  You are quite a rainbow chaser.  Great image.  Yes, I see the ducks.  If this is an eye test, I am happy to report I passed.  Those ducks are way up there in the clouds.  Great shot.   Thanks for commenting on my thistle image.

Have a great Labor Day weekend.   Larry

Yeah I see the ducks too : - )  But its the light that really steals the show here. It almostt gives the impression that the light is falling from the sky with the rain. Lovely image Linda.

Best Regards

Alf

Thanks for the kind comments.

Larry, I think I was lucky to get this shot. The rainbow was illusive; I was driving on the highway and had to find a safe place to pull over. When I finally stopped it disappeared. I was getting back in my car to leave when it reappeared.

We are planning to have a good weekend, my oldest son is coming to visit.

Alf, I always feel so fortunate to see the incredible beauty of the natural world around me every day, plus I get to photograph it. The light here was awesome. I almost drove of the road when I first saw it.

Ruud, it's nice to hear from you.

Hi Linda,

A beautiful scene well captured. Well shot.

I am not doubting the flock of ducks exist, but they are well out of range for a 40mm to resolve them . The one prominent "duck" that appears to have its wings open is two smudges close to one another, like an optical illusion. Our minds fill in the "picture" of what is seen.

A lesson in resolution:

It is interesting to point out that there are three basic levels of resolution :

1] Detection, which you image clearly show. There is something there.

2] Define,  Define is being able to distinguish a spot from an object. If I see a spot in the sky, it could be a bug, bird, plane, or something else. The 40mm lens setting at F/5.6 can not do this at the range.

3]  Identification. If the detection leads to a defined subject, like the dot in the sky is a bird , the Identification tells me the type of bird it really is.

Beyond this point, are the specific details in the image that further distinguish the bird and so forth..............

Best Regards,  Mike

Gallego, nice to hear from you.

Mike, thanks for the lesson in resolution. You are absolutely right. I wasn’t trying to focus on them though, they were a little surprise. I was concentrating on the light and the rainbow. I considered cloning them out, but decided I liked them in there. They are more recognizable on my screen in full resolution before reduction, but definitely not clearly focused. I shot this in a hurry, the scene was changing minute to minute so I didn’t have time to make all the adjustments that I should have, so really this was pure luck that this turned out as well as it did. It would have been better at F/11 or F/16.  Thanks for taking the time to remind me to be mindful of these things. I appreciate your interest in my work.

Keith, thanks for stopping by.

Ricardo, thanks for commenting, it is good to hear from you.

Best wishes!

I like all the different elements in the clouds. The little hillside there is not very interesting but it does offer balance for the sky and clouds. Even the ducks seem happy, I see one smiling! Just kidding, but it's an eye-catching photo, especially in the larger size.

Thank you Joseph. I suspect those ducks would be happy gliding through the sky. I think they are in training for the trip south. Best wishes, Linda
