Entrance to the Magic Theater in Hesse's "Steppenwolf"

jimmcnitt

MAGIC THEATER--NOT FOR EVERYBODY--FOR MADMEN ONLY..............................................................................................Ever since reading Hesse's description of the Magic Theater in "Steppenwolf" I've tried to imagine what this little gothic door that mysteriously appears in an old stone wall what might look like. Here's my answer, concocted in Photoshop with considerable elaboration.

This is an excellent fabrication. In particular I like the colors and lighting. Thanks for sharing, and consider these comments helpful or rubbish as you see fit.

Jim, I agree that this is great. Well done. But imagine it, in addition, with a figure in the foreground ... or a nude figure lying down for example ... ?

This reminds me of a computer game cover, maybe you could do design work for them...or maybe you already do?

I've always been enthraled by Hesse's novels. Your image most definetly captures his spirit. An intriguing image, for me, is the opening scene in "Klingsor's Last Summer," where standing on his verdantly enrobed stone balcony, Klingsor muses "...the hot days, long as they were, flared up and away like burning streamers...Swift dreams...moved feaverishly on."--- By the way Jim, thanks for the comment on my digital efforts. Moral support is always welcome!

This was built in Photoshop from bits and pieces of photographs taken on the Left Bank in

Paris. Comments Welcome.

This is a fabulous dark and menacing image you have created. The walls are absolutely intriguing. You have included so much detail in this image. It is truly a feast for the eyes.
