This is simply beautiful.  And such detail!  I have several prints by Belgian artist Carl Brenders, who paints wildlife with acrylics.  Your use of colour and detail here bears a strong resemblance to his work (to me)...and I mean that as a high compliment.  There's no point in trying to critique this...there isn't anything about it that I don't like.

This is one of those photographs that make me ask myself, "Why can't I do this?"

Thanks Jim...that is quite a compliment and observation! A lot of things went right here. I think that's the key. Since we moved here, I have really been working on that balance of exposing the background and balancing my flash. It's a relatively new exercise for me (as I was always inside with a backdrop). In this case, it was a midtone contrast adjustment, and then a softening and bringing back the sky's color a bit. And of course, a dog who was still and focused for about a second.
