Rigo is one of Melbourne zoo's Western Lowland gorillas. This image

was taken on a cold day where Rigo sought shelter in one of the heated

make shift caves. Although he was sleeping for the most part I was

lucky enough to capture him when he opened his eyes to briefly observe

his surroundings.

thanks for your thoughts

Art, what stikes me about this image is the sadness and dispair in the gorrilla's face (thats how i read it) I think you have presented this image in a fantastic way, love all about it

Great image of this magnificent creature. The lighting is excellent. Big fellow has a very pensive expression. (not negative in any way, just an observation). A great capture I think Art and your presentation as always is very pleasant.

Best regards,

Gail

thank you all very much for your comments and ratings. I know this image may present a theme of sadness of captivity and perhaps the composition does in fact represent that. What I can assure you of is that Melbourne zoo is internationally recognised for its humane and well kept animals while also creating awareness of the plight of these animals in the wild due to man made interferences. Rigo is a very gentle silverback and so I found this type of composition well suited his personality as a gentle giant.

once again thank you all

I agree Art, we went to Melbourne zoo 2 years ago and we were impressed with the dedication to the animals and the attempt to place them in a good environment. Love your work.

Sorry I hate zoos...they freak me out...a zoo isn't the natural habitat for animals no matter what people do to it...

Aside from that I must admit this photograph sets the standard for photographic excellence so...well done :)

Once again an excellent "zoo" shot.  Your pictures inspired me months ago to take a trip to the zoo, and start shooting.

This one is an excellent reminder.

Well Done,

Ben

As usual ... a great shot ... so "human" ... even if I think that their place is not in a zoo (I've read your comment about Melbourne zoo ...) 7/7 Best regards

A beautiful and well done capture of this remarkable creature. He looks so sad - as if he just woke up from a dream in which he was far away and free...

Beautiful photo, beautiful animal. Very sad image - I wish he was free. Thank you for sharing. :)
