alfbailey 1 Posted August 8, 2011 This has to be one of the most frustrating subjects I've ever tried to photograph. I don't know if its the angle of the rock in relation to the mainland, or its size in relation to its vast surroundings, but it has never looked right to me in previous attempts. This one was taken at dusk after a stormy day, when the clouds still rolled in, but the sea had calmed. I hope I might have captured the mood. Your thoughts and comments are always appreciated. Thank You. Link to comment
w-j-li 0 Posted August 8, 2011 Great one with the rolling clouds which make the whole scene more perspective. Love the mood. Learning. Best Regards, Link to comment
trisha jean-angela 3 Posted August 9, 2011 Wonderful capture; surreal even. I love the light coming from the lighthouse giving a bit of warmth to the cool tones; it offers what I perceive to be, hope. Lovely image as usual, Alf, and yet another place I must visit when I am able to visit over there. Thank you for sharing. :) Link to comment

tonyfrench 0 Posted August 9, 2011 Alf, The dark protruding into the space and all the wonderful blue tones is great. The scale of the light house certainly gives a sense of grandeur to the sea. The bit of warmth from the light also adds a nice relief from the blues. Link to comment

alfbailey 1 Posted August 10, 2011 WANGHAN Many Thanks for your interest and encouraging comments, the clouds were all moving at different speeds, the ones nearer the horizon being much slower, I think that maybe one of the elements that have contributed to the image.Best RegardsAlfSTEVE Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts, much appreciated!Best RegardsAlfTRISHA Sincere thanks for your interest and posiitve feedback, much appreciated. I agree with you about the symbolic attributes of the lighthouse, for me they always represent quiet strength, guidance, and yes of course hope. I think you are going to have to extend your vacation when you visit Trisha, your list of places to see gets ever longer : - )Best RegardsAlfANABELA Many thanks for your visit and kind words. It is really gratifying to know I havce managed to convey the atmosphere and mood.Best RegardsAlfJOE Thank you so much! Its a place that has proven really difficult to photograph and capture the mood and scale. This is the first time I've been any where near satisfied with the outcome, but I have to say I think a lot is owed to the long exposure and the late evening light.Cheers JoeAlfPATSY Many thanks for your interest and continued encouragement and support, it really is appreciated.Best RegardsAlfBOBThanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts, much appreciated!Kind RegardsAlfHAMIDSincere thanks for your generous comments and positive feedback, much appreciated. I guess what they say is true "Its not about capturing the subject, its about capturing the light" well it certainly rings true in this case. I've tried to photograph this numerous times, and never been satisfied with the results. I feel I'm getting somewhere with it now though.Best WishesAlfTONYMany Thanks for sharing your thoughts and offeing your kind comments, much appreciated. I'm particularly pleased that the scale of the sea was conveyed to you, because as you stand looking at the lighthouse, that is the overiding feeling, the sense of being a tiny part of something bigger.Cheers Tony!AlfMIKE Many Thanks, the Nikkor 24 - 70mm F2.8 is another great lens, I hesitated about using the 14 - 24 for this shot as I think it would have been just too wide and the lighhouse would have got lost in the composition.Best RegardsAlfRUUDMany thanks for your interest and positive feedback, much appreciated.Best RegardsAlfENGELASincere Thanks for sharing your thoughts and offering such positive feedback, much appreciated. I took the shot just as the light was pointing towards me, then the light revolved again whilst the shutter was open to give that brightness.Kind RegardsAlfZSOLTI really appreciate your thoughts and observations, thank you for taking time to comment.Best RegardsAlf Link to comment
Larry_G1664882113 15 Posted August 13, 2011 Hi Alf,As you have said before, this is that beautiful blue time. Viewed larger the image is especially impressive. You capture it well - great mood and sky and just the right amount of motion in the water to create a sense of eeriness. The light on the lighthouse offers nice sharpness against the soft water. You be the judge on whether the blue is over saturated or natural. Great job, Alf. I really like this one.As always, best regards. Larry Link to comment
Not Here 93 Posted August 14, 2011 Alf... Ahhh, love that 24-70mm ;-). The blues are very appropriate for the time of day and set the mood for the entire scene. The lighthouse becomes a warm island in the dark mystery of the sea. Well done... Mike Link to comment
vbirke 0 Posted August 14, 2011 Outstanding perspective and atmosphere. Riveting, highly remarkable, Alf. A wonderful composition, sooo aesthetic and creative. Light and colors are very striking. This is a maybe a new kind of a photo of a lighthouse. I mean, there are probably millions of lighthouse photos. But this is different and very, very special. What is beyond the horizon? The light guides and provides maybe an answer... I'm dreaming and enjoying viewing. Really a masterpeace. Goes straight to my FAVs.Bw, Volker Link to comment
alfbailey 1 Posted August 15, 2011 LARRY Yes that "blue time" one of my favourite times of day, when the long exposure captures and accentuates the colours of dusk. Its the scale of things that impresses me at this location, so much sky and sea, its vastness reaching out to seeming infinity, whilst our lighthouse stands resolute, against everything the forces of nature can throw at it. The location is well known for its sea bird population too, but I like it for all the above reasons, and more, just the magnificence of it. I don't think it's over saturated, although I did tweak the colour in photoshop ....hmmm maybe too much?Sincere Thanks for your thoughts and positive feedback Larry, your opinions are always interesting and valued.Best RegardsAlfMIKEAhhh yes that lens.......I have recently bought the Nikkor 14 -24mm F2.8 and although its an awesome landscape lens, I still lean towards the 24 - 70mm for most situations. This is a location that is so difficult to capture and do any kind of justice to. I think this is the closest I've got thus far, to conveying the scale and mood of the place, amybe the time of day was the key.Sincere Thanks and Kind RegardsAlfVOLKER Thank you for your most generous and encouraging comments, much appreciated. It's almost impossibe to be original with landscapes, there is almost always someone thats done something very similar before, but I must confess haven't seen one quite like this either. I wanted to convey the scale of the scene, and it would seem in that aspect I have succeeded. I'm really pleased you liked this one, and I'm honoured you consider it a favourite.Best RegardsAlf Link to comment
adan1 0 Posted August 16, 2011 Dramatic and soothing at the same time. The lit lighthouse stands as a beacon of hope and safety in the middle of the tumultuous surroundings. Link to comment

tamaramar 0 Posted August 17, 2011 Wow! Love it! But do you know what is interesting? That I was on Big Hawk Lake (Canada) at exactly the same day and took the pictures. It looks like we were captivated by the same moonlight. I invite you to take a look at my pictures and share your opinion. It was my first experience! I am amazed by the coinsedence :). alfbailey 1 Posted August 17, 2011 ADANMany thanks for your thoughts and positive feedback, very much appreciated. I quite like that word "tumultuous" its a great adjective that epitomised within this scene. Lighthouses do seem to convey a aura of strength and reliabilty, a "beacon of hope" indeed in a world that desperately needs it.Best RegardsAlfGRANT I should have added (View Large) to the title, but I posted the last three a bit hastily. I'm really pleased you like this and its always good to hear from you. Thhank you fo ryour most encouraging feedback.Kind RegardsAlfTAMARAIt's a lovely thought.......sharing the same moonlight : - ) Its my favourite time of day for taking photo's, the light is just so much kinder at this time and long exposures can yield some great results."Big Hawk Lake" sounds fascinating, and what a great name. How could I resist such an invitation, I would love to view your photo's and thank you sincerely for viewing mine.Best RegardsAlf Link to comment
daveinwilton 0 Posted August 19, 2011 Well Alf, as you know, I am a lighthouse freak. You have done an excellent job of capturing even the spirit of this beacon in the dark. A wonderful job was done in showing its remoteness, and the amber light piercing the dark blue hues. Keep up the great work, and thank you for sharing. Best regards...-Dave Link to comment
benhuybrechts 0 Posted August 21, 2011 Hello Alf,I have been on a two week holiday, with a very bad internet connection. So I am doing some catching up, of my favourite photographers. I am glad I am doing this, this is a very nice shot, for me mainly because of the blurry focus, It adds to the strength of the picture.Well done,Ben Link to comment
