Faro a Colon

 

The ten story tall cross-shaped structure on the right was built in

Santo Domingo around the turn of the century and commemorates

Columbus's arrival in the New World. The structure supposedly has

his bones buried below the intersection of the cross. Light beams

visible for a couple of hundred miles can be projected from the top of

the building but have fallen into disuse because when they are

turned on, they use so much electricity the rest of Santo Domingo

and other areas in the Dominican Republic go dark. The statue to the

left is Columbus. It is now sometimes compared to the Eiffel Tower in

that it is a mammoth edifice that has no functional purpose.

Lovely capture. I took the very same capture from I think if we stayed at the same Hotel in Egypt or maybe on the same walkway across the river. Thank you so much for sharing and reminding me of my own trip to Egypt. Warmest Regards.
