In the early 19th C the Egyptians contract with the French to build a

train depot in French ironworks and transport it to Egypt (I believe, it

was to go to Alexandria). Before delivery, the French declared war

on Egypt for unrelated reasons and the Egyptians cancelled the

order. With this pink (orange) elephant on their hands, the French

made a deal with Haiti to have it serve as the facade for the main

market in Port-au-Prince. Thus, there stands to this day a massive

Islamic style building in perhaps one of the most Christian of

countries in the world. My guide made me stand immediately outside

our car in the street to take the photo and would not allow me to walk

around for alternate POVs. She claimed I might well never been

seen again if I passed through the gates into the bowels of the

market, especially with my camera in tow.
