Deep Blue

Hi Alan,

Thanks so much for posting this neat under water shot done with the Nikonos. Nice scene , well executed.

You would think with my massive Nikon collection, that I would own one of these marvels, but I do not like being under water. In fact, I do not like being in the water ! It is an age thing now, as I was a good swimmer 45 years ago.

Oh, one thing great about the Nikonos above water.  It's impervious to everything.  Built like a tank, I've taken it water rafting, parasailing over water, on the beach, lousy weather, in the snow, in rain, etc.  Takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin'  The 35mm lens is the only lens that works above as well as underwater.  It's very sharp. What a brilliant piece of equipment to take images like this underwater! Even more fascinating to learn that they were taken over 25 years ago! Its images like this that begs the question of how far have we really come with the digital age?

Of your three most recent posts I prefer this one for it's dramatic back lighting over the other two which featured direct flash.  The semi silhouette is great but the icing on the cake is the bubble discharge above your subject.  The gradual transition, bottom to top, from black to light blue gives the correct feeling of depth to the shot.  I mean, even as a non-diver, I can relate to the depth of the diver under the water.  While the path of the bubbles draw the eye upward, the safety line nicely draws the wandering eye back to your subject.  Very nice composition.  Best, LM.

Wanghan, Alf and Len.  Thanks all for your comments.  Below are two variations.  The first was with Color correction set in the scanner.  Interesting that the slide matches the original "blue" post but that colors exist in the slide that modern computer programs can pull out to a certain extent.  The last is B/W.  Neither of these last two were cropped to the same as the original nor was the dust on the film spotted out.  Curious as to what you guys think of the variations compared to the original blue?  Thanks again.  Alan
