A nature's moment well captured.

However, I do not understand the stop to F/8 on this super telephoto lens. The 500mm F/4 + 1.4X yields 700 at F/5.6. That is the top performance setting for this lens with a quality converter. I know, I own the entire setup and lab tested it (and shot it many times in the field).

The ISO could have been lowered by using F/5.6 rather than F/8, too.

Thanks Mike! I shoot manual most of the time but lately I've been shooting with shutter priority auto mode (Tv), especially on a day like this day where the light changes by the minutes or less. That's the reason the f-stop was at F8 since it's set by the camera metering system. Also, I always feel better when the lens is closed down a bit from the minimum since I have had so many shot with half sharp birds and it's better to have more DOF to get the whole bird in focus than to get half the bird with sharpness. It's always a guessing game since the bird move, position themself at different angle all the time. This flat profile shot would have work with f5.6 for sure though.

We have to pay lots of vacation dollars to have crab for breakfast... lucky bird.  Excellent shot... Mike

LOL! Well, on the other hand, Mr Mancil we have to pay a lot of money to see GBH having crab breakfast. :-)  .. and happily doing so too!
