Dani tribe inhabits West Papua's Baliem Valley-Indonesia. It's said

that the settlement of Dani people in this area trace back to 20.000

years ago. However, they waited a long time to be discovered. No

sooner than 1938 did the pilot Richard Archbold notice that there was

something special about the deep and large valley. Among the 4000 mt

tall mountains there were clearly recognizable fields, similar to

those he knew from Europe. Dani people was discovered by pure luck and

that came as one of the last and greatest surprises to a world that

had mapped, studied and explored its remotest corners.

Thank you!

Minor correction this is not a nude shot in fact the Indonesian's in Papua Irian Jaya wear koteka's and traditional clothes suited for the surroundings .  I also think your effective use of the light have created an interesting image.  Can suggest if you crop around a portrait level you would end up with a really interesting image that shows the struggles of life.  Might want to consider that.  I have to say the lighting and the power of the image is very well done... I hope to see more... MJ

Thanks so much MJ and Bob for your appreciation of this image.

MJ, during my time spent among the Dani people in Baliem Valley I noticed that they reject clothing other than a woven or grass skirt worn by the women and a penis sheath (called koteka) by the men. Even with the operation Koteka administred by the government of Indonesia encouraging them to wear clothes to be led into the modern world they have rejected that and have continued their traditional wearing...Well, for me this Dani's image is a nude as I don't consider the koteka a piece of cloth...:)

Again thanks for your thoughts and suggestions on this image. As always it's much appreciated! Anabela

Anabela,

Outstanding presentation.

At first glance, I thought this was a wonderful wooden statue.

Best Regards,  Mike

A great study in costumes and traditions, just i suppose you cut out this wonderful anatomic statue from its environment and surroundings, and then placed him in black canvas, but i think the natural environment, even odd and inappropriate would have much documentary value for this type of shot. A minor point, though, for this amazing and wonderful shot. Bravo.
