alfbailey 1 Posted July 3, 2011 This was taken in January, after some of the heaviest snowfalls of the year, it was difficult walking as the snow was hiding rocks and ditches that couldn't be seen and the usual "safe path" was also undetecable. The best place to get a good shot was in the water, so thats where I took this from. I did toy withthe idea of calling it "Profile of Peter Pan" as the ice kind of looks a bit like him. Your thoughts and comments are always appreciated. Thank You. Link to comment
3m 0 Posted July 3, 2011 Alf, I tried finding the 'Peter Pan Profile' here, and think that I found it at long last... ( = just his face, without his hat, right..?) In any event, there sure is 'Tinkerbell magic' present in your capture, I believe :-) I particularly like the sweeping perspective of water and ice, towards the snowy mountain tops beyond. The light breaking through the clouds is a lovely detail and really adds to the overall mood. Another stunning photo..! Link to comment
harlequin 0 Posted July 3, 2011 Beautiful image. You have captured the cold and dark nature of winter (I am not seeing Peter Pan her, but it is all in the eye of the beholder.) Nice color, detail and texture. - Charles Link to comment
papasan 0 Posted July 3, 2011 It took you a while to post this gem... For a minute there i thought you were traveling to the south hemisphere...Great shot, i love the mood you captured. Nice composition, the darker water serve as a line to lead the eye into the picture. Nice sky as well. I think this would also look fabulous in B&W as well (see my 2 min conversion). Regards always - michelPS i cannot find Peter Pan... Link to comment
blue-olympus 0 Posted July 3, 2011 I really can't see Peter Pan but I can see a breath-taking view of this cold Wintery scene...Bravo Alf Link to comment
daveinwilton 0 Posted July 3, 2011 Alf, today here in central California it is expected to reach 100 degrees in the shade, so this memory of winter is quite pleasing. I sort of see Peter's facial profile in the first four points in the ice. Anyway, another beautiful capture by you. The lead in is quite nice, and the colors feel cold. Best regards...-Dave Link to comment
davidspeight 0 Posted July 3, 2011 Alf,This is a cracking shot and caught my attention the second I saw it, that sky is superb. The processing is also spot on. I know if I had been there I would have probably tried to get closer to the rock in the foreground and I'm not sure that would have worked out as well as your composition. In an attempt to offer up something useful my suggestion would be to maybe get down slightly lower and level the camera to try and lose the slight distortion on the right hand side, but it's a minor point. photo by patsy dunn 1 Posted July 3, 2011 Alf, Wow...this is stunning the sky is so powerful & the lighting is as close to perfect as it gets. I would like to be there right now it is in the 90's here today. Thanks for sharing this beauty. Take care, Patsy Link to comment
steveshinn 0 Posted July 4, 2011 A beautiful shot Alf. I got cold the second it popped up on the screen. Congrats on toughing out the best shot. The b&w is interesting but the blue captures the coldness better for me.So, HOW MANY BEERS does it take to see the Peter Pan image...? :-) Link to comment
Donna Stavis 0 Posted July 4, 2011 Alf, I love the blue; it's almost a visceral feel of the cold. My favorite part is the delicate touch of the clouds to the snowy hills, which feels soft and gentle -- nature at its best. I also like the light in the sky and, of course, the path you offer for our eyes to enter this scene. I don't find Peter Pan. Perhaps you got too cold? lol. Take care, and I hope you own extremely warm boots. Link to comment
GailAnthonyHarmer 5 Posted July 4, 2011 Lovely Alf. Such beautiful editing, impressive clouds, fantastic clarity in the ice and water. You always have a 'specialty' on the 'menu' and it never fails to 'deliver'. Thankyou for being here.......truly, Gail Link to comment
h_r_herle 0 Posted July 4, 2011 Hi Alf, the blue is tinge in the photograph gives a "chill" effect. Nice use of light and good composition. The sky - cloud play is great.Thanks,Harsha. Link to comment
ruudalbers 0 Posted July 4, 2011 A very nicely composed beautiful shot with impressive lighting, Alf!Best regards,Ruud. Link to comment
matussik 0 Posted July 4, 2011 This is splendid! The blue hue renders well the coldness but there is also some sun glow in the clouds and water reflection dispatching some nice touch of warmer spots giving a positive feel to the image - the little portion of blue sky visible through the area where the clouds are ripped apart also helps in balancing the cold atmosphere. The composition is very neat with edge of the ice cap guiding the eye into the picture - I also notice that in the common sense of reading from left to the right this edge is pointing up and is thus emphasizing the positive feel of the image (try flipping horizontally the image and see the difference). I also like the inclusion of the little snow covered rocks in the foreground that are a nice anchor for the eye to settle on.Regarding Peter Pan... well I think I can see the beginning of a profile: the throat at the lower left, then the chin, a little open mouth, then a very pointy nose and then.. . well some hairs pointing to the front but no eyes?Best regards,Jan Link to comment
hamidfarzandian 0 Posted July 4, 2011 A winner shot, again perfectly balanced and composed. Wise choice of cool tones, in coordinance with overall atmosphere made it superb and impressive. I also want to adress exquisite details and sharpness in all part of this scene, which is really remarkable. Framing of elements, though very good and impressive, but would improve IMHO with complete inclusion of right side boulders by turning camera to right a tad, although completely a minor point, to an already unbeat shot. A big bravo for this great shot.Hamid. Link to comment
hamidfarzandian 0 Posted July 4, 2011 B/W version is also a good suggestion for this "hypertone" scene! Link to comment
alfbailey 1 Posted July 4, 2011 EVERYONE For all those struggling to find Peter Pan, take a look at the extreme bottom left of the image follow the line if his neck in the ice, to his chin, pointy nose and then the peak of his cap.......ok you might also need a warped imagination like mine : - )MARJOLEIN Ahhh see I knew you'd find it, ........eventually : - ) Yeah just his face.....if you streeeetch the imagination a bit further....maybe the peak of his hat?...yeah Ok I'm pushing it now : - )This was taken back in January and the - 7C temperature didn't feel cold after the - 14C we had previously experienced. It was one of those days when the light was forever transient, the clouds and mist moving swiftly around the surrounding peaks. I'm really pleased you liked it Marjolein and sincere thanks for taking your time to examine the finer details.Best RegardsAlfCHARLESMany Thanks for your interest and positive feedback, much appreciated. Not seeing Peter Pan? .....ok Close you eyes ...click your heels together and think of home........ooops sorry wrong movie .....alternatively see above : - )Best RegardsAlfMICHELI like it! Your B & W conversion looks great!I did take a while posting this one......its been on my desk top since January and I've been having debates with myself ever since wether I should post it or not......finally after a couple of weeks where I haven't been able to get out, I reviewed some of my older images and decided to post this one. See ^^ up there for the Peter Pan guide : - )Sincere Thanks for sharing your thoughts and feedback Michel, very much appreciated.Best RegardsAlfKEITH Open another bottle of wine, screw your eyes up tight and Peter Pan will appear : - ) ........well it works for me.Sincere Thanks Keith !AlfDAVE Yeah you got it, thats the Peter Pan profile..........I was thinking along the same lines about temperature, although ours hasn't been quite that hot. I did think something refreshingly cool was called for though and found this sitting on my desk top.Sincere thanks DaveAlfDAVID Many Thanks for your thoughts and feedback, they are very much appreciated! You have raised some interesting and valid points, I may have taken some shots a bit closer to the snow covered rock but my aim on this particular one, was to get the ice leading in from the bottom left corner, but yeah maybe I should have prioritised the composition slightly differently. The distortion is another good point and on a image where there was a more distinct horizon, it could ruin the image, this I have discovered to my cost and I will bear your suggestions in mind when faced with any similar shots, I have as well changed the wide angle I use, and hopefully the Nikon 14 - 24 f2.8 will be a bit more forgiving.Cheers DavidAlfPATSY Guaranteed to cool you off, two minutes soaking your feet in this water and you'll be ready to face more shopping : - ) Many thanks for your interest and kind words Patsy.Best RegardsAlfSTEVE Sincere thanks for your interest and positive feedback, much appreciated! I do like the B & W version, but if I was pushed for a preference.........I'd remain on the fence : - )As for Peter Pan............my advice is just keep drinking the beers until he appears.....you can count the empties in the morning! ........Alternatively look at the top of my replies to "EVERYONE" and follow the directions : - )Cheers Steve!AlfDONNA Many thanks for your eloquent critique its always good to hear from you and I do appreciate the feedback. It was about - 7C but didn't really feel that bad as there was little wind and we were moving about. As for footware, you can't beat neoprene wellingtons......I stood in the icy water for about 20 minutes and wasn't in the slightest bit cold or uncomfortable.I wasn't cold when I discovered Peter Pan....which just goes to prove I don't need to be suffereing from Hyperthermia to hallucinate : - ) But if you need to find him just look at the top of my replies to "EVERYONE" and follow the directions : - )Cheers Donna!AlfGAILThank you so much for your encouragement and positive feedback. I'm really pleased this one "whet your appetite" even if it was cold when it arrived : - ) Seriously though, I'm really pleased you liked this. Cheers Gail!Warm RegardsAlfHARSHAMany thanks for your thoughts and observations, much appreciated. I was very fortunate that the clouds and low mist were moving around the mountain tops and diffusing the sun to allow the dramatic looking light variations.Best RegardsAlfRUUDThank you for your continued interest and support, I appreciate your feedback.Best RegardsAlfPIERRE Sincere Thanks for your most positive feedback Pierre!Best RegardsAlfJANSincere thanks for your most thorough and heartwarming critique, much appreciated! I think the extreme cold temperatures can very often aid the atmosphere and mood of an image just by virtue of the clarity, and I think this was a case on this particular day. Your analogy of the "reading left to right" is very astute and I must confess it's something I didn't consider until you pointed it out, the "horizontal flip" proving it beyond doubt. My aim was to compose the image with the edge of the ice as a leading line, and the inclusion of the snow covered rock was of almost equal importance, if I took the shot again I would allow more emphasis to the rock as suggested by David. As for Peter Pan.........Yeah you have it! ........but alas no eyes...I think he was snow blind : - )Best RegardsAlfHAMID Sincere thanks for sharing your thoughts and making some excellent suggestions, much appreciated. I did take a few shots which included more of the snow covered boulders, but on this one I wanted to emphasise the leading line of the ice from the bottom left corner, but its a good observation and maybe just a tilt of the camera would have included more. I have just bought a Nikon 14 - 24mm and even on a full frame camera I am astonished to find that I still frame some shots and think, " I could do with it being wider" I too like Michels B & W version, it certainly adds a good alternative to the presentation.Best RegardsAlf Link to comment
drkallol 0 Posted July 5, 2011 Wonderful image.I liked both the version but to me the coloured one is more striking.Very nice calm scene with subtle play of lights in the clouds at backdrop. My best regards.Kallol Link to comment
melloncollie 0 Posted July 5, 2011 outstanding light and composition. usually i prefer color version but in this case Michel's B&W seems a bit more impressive. well done. Link to comment

mike_palermiti 0 Posted July 5, 2011 Hi Alf,Spectacular image.Great implementation of the Nikkor wide angle zoom lens. The presentation would be great as a large back lighted image hanging on a wall.I could easily sit back and watch it for a long period.Best Regards, Mike Link to comment
