Joseph (One Eye) 1998

jimvanson

The original neg-APX 400 @ 250 in Rodinal @ 1+100 is more tonal then this finished print. I'm trying to create a different look one that is starker, more fearsome, a look that the APX's grain supports.

A close up shot of my friend Joseph taken at a Pow Wow in Chillawack

in 1998. I'm trying to achieve a certain look with this shot. A look

that is quite stark and grainy, yet sharp and tonal...its the

opposite of the way that I used to print this shot in a conventional

darkroom. There Id print this shot through a layer of anti-newton

glass to get a very soft look. Regardless of which darkroom I use

Id still tone the print to this red/sepia...its the tone and

density differences between monitors that is presently causing me

grief. I set up this shot so that it looks great on my monitor and

when I check it on another monitor its all green or orange or

black...so much to learn...

Jim, your "one eye" pictures are awesome. I hope you have a series of them, framed and matted, on your living room wall - I sure would. Great work!

Hi Jim,

I think it is an excellent photograph as usual.

However, I do wish the photograph to be richer. I would love to feel closer to your friends eyes. See more detail, highten his gaze...

Nonetheless, perfectly cropped, lots of expression, he looks proud and full of emotions.

Excellent

As per usual Jim, another masterpiece.

The composition, tonality, moment, aesthetic and style are all great. The emotional response from his youthful look mixed with another determined gaze add to achieving excellence!

Cheers,

Ringo

After looking back and forth to this one and the straight-on version, I think I like this one better. The sepia tone and the nice angle put it just above the other. Note: Which of the 2 is flipped?
