A cute photo. Both subjects are looking in the same direction (toward the camera)-- very important. I really like the contrast of the smiling subject (probably mom) and the reticent look on the gitls face. Nice job.

I've always been a fan of darkened edges in black and white photography. I get the feeling im peering throught a keyhole into the past.

good, but the blue-grey frame doesn't go well with the sepia toned (that I enjoy) image.

Also there's some overburnt detailless areas and the composition is too centered.

I appreciate all the comments and ratings. The story behind this photo is that I was asked to take a picture of the girl who was unusually serious, and nothing would make her smile. So my girlfriend eventually found a creative way of bringing a smile into the frame.

 

BTW, the frame is absolutely neutral grey. It can be used to check color balance :-) If the frame looks bluish, the monitor is probably out of color balance ;-(

 

But I agree that the framing could be better thought out.

I like the "peering through a keyhole to the past" analogy of another post. Great image. And it's timeless.

Seems a tad fuzzy to me; could be the format. I think I would have brought the mother a bit more into the open.
