Sam, Your original seems a bit dark to me.  I know that Ansel Adams said that the negative was like a musical composition and the print like a performance.  Perhaps, in digital terms, the original file is like the composition and the way one processes it is the performance.  Anyway, here is a performance of your composition by me, to see what you think.
