These two eagles were taking a break from fishing. They are watching some other eagles (do you call groups of eagles "flocks"?) fishing at a stream as it flowed into a lake. There were over a dozen Bald Eagles, several Golden Eagles and what looked like Perigrene Falkons. I have never seen a group of eagles do this before, I was amazed. I could get close enough to get really good shots of the fishing activity, but here's a poor shot to give you an idea of what it was like.

This shot definately cried out for a longer lens, but you have made a great job using what was available....congrats.

I was using my new Canon 100-400 4.5-5.6 L IS. I am still getting used to it.  This one was hand held and almost at it's maximum focal lenght, 310 mm. Anything over 350 is generally too soft with or without a tripod. I would love to get some clear detailed images of the many magnificent birds we have all around us here. Thanks for commenting. It is nice to hear from you.

Hard to tell for sure without seeing tail or underwings, but looks more like a first year bald eagle on the left.  Also, golden eagles usually hunt rabbits, ground squirrels and the like.  Cool image sittin on the fence posts.

Linda,

I tend to agree with Monte. I too think that is a younger Bald Eagle on the left. I maybe wrong, but I think I read somewhere the Golden Eagles are just a bit larger than the Bald Eagle. I do know that the Bald Eagle does not get it's white head and tail, and yellowed beak until mature.

Regardless, a very nice and unique shot! I've seen them on the edge of the ice, or on the frozen lake, but as of yet, . . . I've not observed them perching on a fence post. They seem to like to be much higher!

Regards always,

Jim j.
