I posted another view of this broken tree in April, called "Living Under a Western Sky", part of a series I have been working on. This is a different shot, with a bit more processing. I think this one is more dramtic. I appreciate your thoughts. Thanks for looking.

Excellent dark, stormy, mood on this image Linda! The clouds, and high contrast, yield a dramatic background for the broken tree on Rose Hill. Excellent work Linda!

All the best,
Neil

In the middle of all the tornadoes to the south of you, it's hard not to look up in the sky and feel a bit small and threatened.  I think the tree knows.

Thank you all so much for taking the time to comment and view.

To me, this tree seems to be making a statement in the dramatic way it stands against the awesome sky, broken in two. It wasn’t a storm that killed this tree, it was Pine Beetles. Entire forests have been destroyed over the past few years. The Pine Beetle are supposed to die off in the winter, with cold temperature. Because of Global warming they don’t die and are now flourishing, out of control.

Linda:  Very dramatic but I'm wondering, did you deliberately underexpose it or reduce the exposure in post to get the dramatic effect?  It appears darker than you'd actually see with this lighting.  Nice compostition and upward angle. Alan

the dramatic effect in the clouds comes from using a polarizing filter. I used a B+W 77mm UV-Haze 010 F-pro here. I have been experimenting with HDR, which I also used here, but there wasn’t a dramtic change from the original. Here is the original shot, straight out of the camera.

Wonderful work Linda.  I like that you returned to the same place to take a different shot. This shot is quite nice and dramatic, the clouds are really well defined against the blue sky and the tree contrasts against them nicely.  Truly lovely image one i would proudly hang on my wall.  Regards always - michel

Very nice.  You have made an so-so photo into a beautiful scene.  It does seem a bit threatening after all the tornado outbreaks this week.
