I would suggest that his face being placed so close to the border at which he is looking creates a counter productive composition.  The viewer looks at his face,  moves in the direction of his eyes, goes out of the picture and is done - without really looking at the picture very much at all.  One of the time honored principles of composition is to "give the side looking eyes space in which to look through, inside the picture."
