barmijo 0 Posted February 19, 2003 This is a lovely shot. I like the depth created by the saturated colors in the foreground contrasted with the less saturated mountains. Well done. Link to comment
denis_m 0 Posted February 19, 2003 Wow! I would be there. Great lighting & beautiful photo. Link to comment
richard van hoesel 0 Posted February 19, 2003 Awsome location, beautifully captured Dennis. My personal preference would be without the boat but I know I'm biased against man-made structures in nature shots. Link to comment
Guest Guest Posted February 19, 2003 Thank you ,Dennis....it is a wonderful view and photo and I am not a tourist:-))...Anna Link to comment
dennismk 0 Posted February 19, 2003 You know Richard I feel the same way very strongly! If you look at my nature shots you will almost never see any people or buildings. But I love boats! And think of them of works of art. Well very few are really, compared to all the ugly sailboats designed by blind draftsmen:-)But some are and I owned one for many years. Any way another thing a boat does it a image like this is to give a sense of scale to the image. I have this great pan shot of a monster glacier taken in a number of shots which I have stiched together. The image was taken from our dingy, and not on shore so it is very hard to tell how big it is with out a boat or something to give it the sense of scale that it truly is. I have thought about putting a boat in the image for that very reason. Put rather bored with it anyway, Thank you for your comments! As you know I love your work with the sea! In Alaska around where I live there are no roads to the open sea. Many go to forjds and large protected bays, but no real surf, Maybe in Homer some times but not like the coast of northern California. So we use a boat in the summer to get out into the real sea and our lovely Prince William Sound. This shot is only about 6-7 miles out side of Seward, Alaska. And is one of the most beautiful coves I have ever seen from Alaska down the west coast to Mexico and sailing over to Hawaii! The sheer power of the place is truly stunning!! Link to comment
dennismk 0 Posted February 19, 2003 Kind of a post card shot coming from me. But do not worry, soon I will twist it to a darker more fine art verison that no one will like or ever wish to buy. It is a little darker on PN than I wanted but to replace the image with one a bit brighter takes to much time pluse comments have been already made. Maybe I will post an update later. Link to comment
christian deichert 1 Posted February 19, 2003 Postcard images aren't bad, they're just normally of scenes that have been done to death. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think this qualifies as a scene that's been done to death. Great composition of a beautiful scene -- kudos. Link to comment
kris_bennett 0 Posted February 19, 2003 It's a little too dark for me. Especially in the lower left area. Kinda makes the whole picture look flat. Just my $.02 though... Link to comment
dennismk 0 Posted February 20, 2003 I think I said that the image was posted a bit to dark in my first remarks. Do worry I said also I plan on twisting into an more dark and forbiding image as soon as I have time! It is much to cheerfull:-) And Tobias or who ever, I love those old post cards! Should to a series on them;-) Link to comment
valarie_mckenzie 0 Posted February 20, 2003 Recently, I have attempted to find my own way in this field... I have a greater apperciation for this artist than before. Not only does Dennis have a natural and artistic eye... his work shows to be a gifted artist!Raw and natural indeed! As for you that might rate him less or make negitive comments...it is obviouse this does not come from a clean heart or soul to not be able reconize true and pure talent! YES THIS STATEMENT AND OPINION COMES FROM SOMEONE CLOSE TO DENNIS.... HIS YOUNGEST SISTER AND BIGGEST ADMIRER! Link to comment
dennismk 0 Posted February 20, 2003 The totaly non ask for or paid for comment by my sister is very nice of her. But I want every to know I like dialog on images as long as they are civil, so far on this post they have been. But I do find it very interesting when people open an account on the same day and go about droping tons of 3/3 on peoples work all over PN and have none of there own work on PN. I always like to see who is making coments good or bad so I can judge how well they can "see" and what kind of work they do. That gives the comment more value. Many times I learn a lot from some comments. Low bomber ratting are worthless and have no value. The whole ratting system has improved a lot. But I do not take it very seriously. It rather funny really to watch all the game playing that goes on here. Much better than day time TV :-) Rather sad though! :-( Link to comment
aki_yamazaki 0 Posted February 20, 2003 Interesting dialogue....I have never seen your other photos but this shot in itself is stunning. While admittedly postcardy in the cliche nature shots often seen, the unexpected scale of the shot is breathtaking. Would it be better taken w/ an 8x10, arguably yes? A bit brighter yes. Nevertheless, it does capture a moment and allows people like me to vicariuosly experience of Alaska where I have never been but wish I could. Thx for sharing the image. Link to comment
dennismk 0 Posted February 20, 2003 I respectfully disagree with all of your last comments. Looking to see who made comment is not sneaking. It is why the system is in place. I do remember the bad old days when many photographer would set up false accounts and rate them selfs high and those around them low and the games got even worse. It is less worse now, but still a funny game to watch. Good day to you sir. Link to comment
dennismk 0 Posted February 20, 2003 To those who have read my introduction to this image I said It was loaded a bit dark and I might post an update, though as many of you know I like dark images. But in this one I wanted a more Saturated effect mainly to see the feedback it would get :-) And it has been interesting. Thank you all for your comments! Best wishes Link to comment

scott_cary 0 Posted February 21, 2003 I really like the 3D effect from the light and rich colors. What a beautiful image! Link to comment
mitch_codner1 0 Posted February 21, 2003 Dennis, I'm eagerly awaiting the darker version (soon I will twist it to a darker more fine art version that no one will like or ever wish to buy). And I like the boat, it gives a nice counter-point, nature unrestricted Vs subdued construction. And I like having some of the picture without detail, life has variety. As for Tobias, he's variety too, a little spice to liven up the party. I'm also interested to see what this Ph.D. Candidate from Stanford can do in this photographic arena. We're all here to learn, Tobias. Especially, me. Rants from an old fart Link to comment
dougityb 0 Posted February 21, 2003 Rich colors and everything. The boat mast and the patch of snow next to it draw my attention very strongly no matter where I look to the end of spoiling the landscape. A boat without a mast would be more effective in my opinion. Lovely light. Link to comment
stephen_ellaway 0 Posted February 21, 2003 Absolutely stunning Dennis, what a place, what an image! I love the richness of the colors / tones. You have done a fantastic job capturing this scene..I could just day dream.... Steve Link to comment
monti 0 Posted February 22, 2003 Tobias, most anyone can look at an image and tell whether it's out of focus. I'm not following your logic. Your presumption seems to say there is no such thing as a craftsperson who has the capability (based on proven skill and experience) to speak with some degree of authority on a particular subject. If you ever post an image and Joe Blow says it sucks and then Ansel Adams reincarnates himself to give you a 7/7, I wonder which opinion would sway you? As far as this image goes, I like it, even though the trained side of me says it's a bit of an uninventive composition. Kudos to the power of place. I do however, (in both versions posted) see a lot of digital artifacts that lend painterly qualities to what is supposed to be a reasonably faithful web reproduction of a photograph. I'm sensing a lot of lightening in the upper reaches that is causing a misty effect (including the snow turning bluish). The irony is that the effect lends itself pleasingly to the image but scores less with me because I sense the digital representation has more aesthetic than is inherent in the original photograph.
