I like the abstraction and colors in this photo, but it strikes me just as a picture of a painting. A documentation of someone else's art, not really a photo of an existing subject.

Comments, ratings appreciated on this abstract composition. One of

an ongoing series--hopefully to be shown in a gallery in the next

year or two. Thanks

Very, very, very fine photograph.

On the carping side: Sharpness is fine for an 8x10. The white blob in the upper left should be relegated to the status of lint -- even if it was on the original subject: Subjects can have lint, can't they? I like the blue at the left.

This picture is close to perfection.

I'm not usually fond of this kind of image, but this one has more depth to it than most others, I think. Good job Robert.

i've only been on photo.net for 24 hours, and i'm really surprised at how harsh the comments and ratings are (and from some people whose own portfolios are nothing special). with that said, i love this type of abstract photography and have always wanted to photograph this type of colorful rust after i discovered this old, rusting research vessel that sits permanently at a pier on the hudson river. i disagree totally that this is "like photographing someone else's art." rust is a natural phenomena just like anything else in nature. you could say the same thing about a landscape or a flower. there may be the slightest issue with focus, but it's hard to tell. i would advise removing the white blob because it's not interesting enough to create tension in the composition. overall, i really love this photo and the series.

I'm afraid I disagree with the necessity for technical perfection with this sort of image. For me this is all about responding to colour, pattern, tone, texture and composition, and they all work for me here. The white spot is a distraction and I think I would remove it.

Thanks for your comment, Hannah. I agree about the white spot. Also, the slide is a lot sharper than the photo.net image. I had just gotten the scanner when I shot these and my initial scans weren't very good.
