Bamboo has and continues to play an integral role in the lives of the

people of Assam in N.E. India. "About 89 bamboo species out of 126

recorded in India grow naturally in the different forest types of this region

or are cultivated across its tropical and sub-tropical belts." Cultural,

social and economic traditions of the state are deeply intertwined with

this common natural resource.

"It grows in natural forests, and is cultivated in homesteads, groves and

on private plantations. It is utilised in many ways, for housing, fencing,

functional articles, agricultural implements, basketry, and even fuel and

food. People possess traditional skills of working with the material, and

knowledge of the cultivation and management of bamboo.

Almost every rural house in the state has a few clumps of bamboo

growing in its backyard.

In industry, bamboo finds its major application in the manufacture of

paper.

Being relatively light, bamboo floats easily, and can be transported over

water at minimal cost.

What a great capture, Rajat! Bamboo may be relatively light, as you say in your excellent commentary on the plant, but the fellow in this shot is clearly laboring with his load. I love the way the bamboo fills the frame; the colors are fine also, and the angle of shooting was perfect.  I trust you took your shoes off before wading dutifully into the water. Well done! Cheers...Bill

Rajat, a superb shot. Composition, exposure and colours are very good. What I like most is the dripping water from his overhead bamboos.

Dear Rajat, I have a fscination with BAMBOO, some how I spot it in many places and did not know about 129 different varieties. I know about Gudea which grows in Colombia and is huge! I have a friend who has about 10 different varieties in his yard, including the Budda Bellie which is my favorite. Warm regards.

Rajat, This is a amazing photograph, along with a educational narrative in the beginning. Thank you so much for giving me insights to culture and people I may never have the chance to see.

With kind regard, Todd
