John...  That the young lady is nude is irrelevant and most decidedly of secondary interest (for a change).  While she may be the most uninhibited of models, her disarming smile and mischievous eyes are what I find totally magnetic...  Unique pose but her personality makes the shot; well, you did pretty well with the lighting as well ;-)... Boy!  This is a tough one to critique,  John.  There are some aspects of this that really thrill me and some that cause me difficulties.  When I stay aware of my eyes' motion and where they go, they obviously start with the face and move down the lower arm to the curl of the metal support.  Then they go back up the table and up her left arm and return to the face, which is your strongest element here.  Then I am suddenly shocked by the perspective foreshortening and the fact that her thigh and derrière seem too large.  In gentlemanly haste I look away and find myself looking at the curly piece of metal on picture left, which adds nothing to the composition.  I beat a retreat back to her face and then, with variations, repeat the above journey.  Her facial expression makes me melt but some of the other elements make me softly recoil.  I have not experienced that duality in your other pictures.

I have a few suggestions; first try cropping out the far left side of the image, get rid of the curly metal there, which seems like such a visual trap.  This would have the effect of centering her face, left and right, but that is not my intentional advice, just a consequence of my suggestion.

If you have the chance at a reshoot, think of using a longer focal length lens (or zoom) to change the foreshortening effect and perhaps even lower depth of field with a different f/stop.

There is nothing wrong with the lighting and I don't know whether to rank this low contrast approach as your individual style or a rut into which you seem to have fallen.  Lighting could be used to separate her face from the posterior parts of her anatomy, even if a low depth of field were also used.

My regards,

Jerry

Thank you all.

Jerry, there are some very interesting observations there, thank you especially. It's not the first time I hear that my pictures may be a little flat. It could just be the way I see things, or then it could be my old computer screen which is one of those old models that are one and a half times as deep as they are wide! As for the cropping and the mettle handle, sure I get you point and appreciate it, but I guess there will always be different ways of seeing things. The focus issue too, I have difficulty imagining it otherwise, but there is no reason why someone else should not. I don't think I'll try this particular spot again (it's actually the table on the staircase outside my neighbour's front door), but I certainly will be working with the model again. Sometimes friends become models, but then the opposite is often true too.

The model's face and pose is so captivating here, that I was immediately drawn into this image.  The lighting and DOF don't elicit any negative feelings for me in this photograph and the asymmetrical nature of the composition actually creates addition visual interest for me.  I feel this shot would really lose something and become less intriguing if there were more symmetry.  I also really like the subtle repetition of curves in her body and the table legs.......in addition to the longer slim arms and more upright table leg sections.  The repetition of the blacks also helps keep the image cohesive.  The beauty of her face, smile and eyes is so strong here, that it may not make much difference, but the only thing I might change is to create a little more variation in the background with the lighting.  A special image indeed.  I can certainly understand why you'd want to create more "photographic magic" with this model.  Shoot on!

I find the uniqueness of the pose fascinating. There is an interesting echo of the table leg shape in he arms. Her expression, with the bright red lips and beautiful eyes, keep drawing my eye there. I feel the soft lighting is consistent with your style. I might use this as an influence at my next shoot and see how the same idea works in another style.

This is fantastic, don't change a thing. The saturated red lipstick, the shorter focal length, and the table really enhance the face/smile and give the image a surrealistic quality that reminds me a bit of the cheshire cat from "Alice in Wonderland".

The model is truly magnificent, my complements to you both.

Exceptional symmetry and POV, John.

Beautiful subject ... she has an Ann Hathaway smile and sensual energy.

This is not an easy pose.

I find the arms and hands especially graceful as she balances on her

elbow and knees, and the hair just seems to pull it all together effortlessly.

This is a beautiful image.

Regards, Bill

PS John, is this the 50mm or 85?

I like the absence of optical distortion.

Many thanks to all ..

Bill, this is a 18-70 mm zoom lens on my first digital camera, a NIKON D70.
