Thank you for your comments. What attracted me to this scene was the fume produced by hot water as the surface was being cleaned. The day was busy and I took about four shots and decided that this was perhaps the most presentable.

Wonder what people think about the man walking into the frame on the right; is he a distraction? Also, even after cropping a bit to the left, there seems to be some wasted space there.

I find the things on the right to be unrelated to the photo. The persons on the left help fill the frame (when I imagine photo without them). I like this tighter crop. It zeros in on the guys.

I think the suggestion of Meier makes a lot of sense and optimize the picture but for me the fact of the watering can extends to the exact center of the wheel is the main quality of this photo…

…even better because this connexion only takes place in 2D. If we read it on 3D the two characters are completely unrelated to each other.

M.

Thank you both for your kind comments.

The cropping, as demonstrated, gives a square shape to the photo. By cutting out the bits on the left, it closes in too much on the two main subjects in the shot. To me, both the square format and the isolation of the figures taking other scenes in the street (their surroundings) may make them too abrupt. Maybe I could crop a bit more where the pipe touches the ground. Just as Mr Samel found the people on the right play some part in the photo, the stuff on display perhaps make the scene as well. I suppose a major "flaw" is the wasted foreground on the left. I thought the spray/mist would suffice but it may well not.

Interesting comment on the position of the hose to the wheel; I concede that it was never a part of my composition. But Miguel sees it as a major part of the shot. Is it simply because it connects the main subjects?

I am grateful for both of your comments. It means a lot to me.

Having Hasselblads and at one time using them, I have a liking for square format. I see no wasted space in the forground.  I still prefer the crop. The apparal makes the photo in my opinion too "busy" and for me has nothing to do with the subjects (I understand your point though). A second thing about the crop. Exceptions of course, but in general more space is preferred in the direction of movement or direction the subject is lookin -in this case on the right side. The crop give me more of a feel of that -that the cycylist is not on his way out. You need him for the photo. Of course you could not make this photo any other way than the way it is.

With all due respect to your comment; It is only a moment in time and therefore Samrat had no control about where the water reached be it better or worse. As for the man and the cyclist, I like the feeling that they are in their own worlds. disparate things are happening and neither is aware of the other. Seems that the discussion means that this is a good photo. כל הכבוד

Thanks for explaining your point further. That's another pearl that I'll remember while composing....space in the direction of sight.
