Hanging Figure - whichreferences Edgar Degas's famous painting of an acrobat, Miss La La atthe Cirque Fernando, Paris (1879) - alludes to similar gestures inother works, such as the hanging figures depicted by the Spanishartist Francisco de Goya, victims of torture and summary execution intime of war in Disasters of War series.
