starvy 7 Posted March 11, 2011 A sense of fun is on display here as well as affection. I'd like to have seen a little more critical sharpness. Link to comment
kslonaker 0 Posted March 13, 2011 I have to blame the lack of sharpness on the upload and low resolution image - I went back to my original and it's tack-sharp. I shot it at 1/160 and f11. I can see a real difference when looking back at the original. I don't know how to correct that for uploads as I don't want to upload a higher resolution image. Hmmm...now that I look at it again, I'm wondering if the perception of lack of sharpness is because I took the highlights off his nose?? See SOOC attachment (again, a low res version). Thoughts and suggestions welcomed! Link to comment
LenMarriott 9 Posted March 16, 2011 To be sure, a delightful portrait of this pup. You seem to have adequate DOF to cover all important elements here, nose, eyes, & ears. I also think your decision to tone down the nose highlights was a good one. They could be considered distracting. The totally black background increases the drama and, with no distracting elements there, helps maximize the importance of your subject. On my screen I detect some colour distortions (red?) so I ran this one through PS to 'purify' it. Your artistic bent may not agree & that's OK too. In the end it's the customer's opinion that really matters. I also cloned in a tad more background to give the ears a bit more room from the edge of the frame. I then re-sized to 511 px width and then RESHARPENED. This last step is where you may be experiencing some frustration. Unless I somehow misunderstood, you may be resizing for display AFTER you've sharpened at another size. ??? In any case, my 2 cents worth. Gotta go now, I have this sudden urge for some Taco Bell take-out. Best, LM. Link to comment
kslonaker 0 Posted March 17, 2011 I get my images ready for print, including sharpening, etc., then resize for posting to my Facebook page and PN, so don't sharpen at the reduced resolution/size. Maybe I need to sharpen a second time then. The original was actually shot horizontal, but I cropped this way for a head and shoulders type of portrait. I could easily go back and get some more of the background on either side of her head and that's probably a good suggestion. She is an orangey-pink pup more than the yellow in your edit. Her skin shows through some of her fur on her chest and her ears, but I see why you would want the pink reduced if you hadn't seen her in person. Thanks for taking the time to work on this and comment. Funny thing - we had tacos (homemade) for dinner! Now I know where I got the craving from! :) Link to comment
markboyer 0 Posted March 17, 2011 Very nice pooch portrait. I'd consider going with a last sharpen after reducing the size for web display. Link to comment
