This is my favorite photo from a recent trip to DC. While I'm obviously partial to my own shots, what do you think of this?

I took a lot of column shots while there so that my wife, a Latin teacher, could show her students the various types of columns and how we borrow heavily from Roman and Greek culture.

A fine composition covering all the important elements with this detail shot.  After all, the rest of the columns are going to look the same from here to the bottom and every viewer will recognize that, so no need to record them and thus diminish the intricate stonework we see here.  You've also managed to capture the appearance of the rest of the structure that rests on these columns with the same idea that it's going to look the same all across the front of the structure for sure.  All the diagonal lines don't hurt either, introducing a dynamic to an otherwise static scene.  The soft light, while minimizing shadows, is directional enough to permit the textures to be appreciated as well as the 'glow' from the smooth stone surfaces.  A keeper, I'd say, which successfully completes your intended mission.  Except for revealing the true colour of the stonework B&W would work too. An aside:  Are not 'photo'and 'graphic' Greek words  meaning 'light' and 'draw'?  :-)  More Greek influence!  Best, LM.

Thanks Len, for your feedback.  Your thoughts about what is captured versus what is known to be there outside of the photograph is a great point and probably articulates what I like best about this.
