around -25 to -30c, for this shot I was sitting on the ice to get a different

perspective as the steam comes up from the river and they gradually

vanish from sight.

Very nice work! First I thought that a narrower cut might have been better because it would have focused more on the "important" birds in the center, but the more I look at it, the more I believe that you have selected just the right cut. It makes for a "middle scene" that is framed by the outer birds on left and right, and the geese with stretched neck in background separate foreground from background. The flock in the middle then forms the subject. Quite nice composition. The subdued tones are also very nice.

thank you for your thoughful comment.  I had in fact cropped out the left, then the right, and finally went with this version.  I am attaching the original photo... keeping the foreground and the top also somehow spoiled the look-and-feel I was going for.

then again, now that I compare them, the untouched shot seems to work too!

L. J: Yes, I agree. However, in the second one (the "Original shot totally untouched") the ice in the foreground competes with the main subject, and the attention will move between the two, the ice and the foremost birds. In the cropped version the main focus will stay in the flock of birds in front of the one with the stretched neck. Therefore, for me I think the first version "tells the story" in a better way. But that's me :)
