The foothills east of Bakersfield have a certain elegance that truly reveals itself at specific times of the year. Their beauty is captivating in spring when the slopes are carpeted with green and wildflowers spread a wash of colors. By late May, the terrain becomes bland with a brown tinge. The appeal is minimized by the oncoming dry season. As the winter months set in, their grace returns. When the slopes are blanketed with snow, they seem to take on a more grandiose characteristic. Foothills become mountains as the storm clouds kiss the higher reaches. The fresh snow plastered across the trees and slopes imbues an alpen quality. Looking down on the clouds provides the visitor with a strong sense of being on a high perch above all others. It is rare at this latitude to witness this event. It approaches transcending reality, at least for the moments that the snow remains. Within hours of the sun's return, it seems to vanish as quickly as it descended. I feel extremely fortunate to participate in this surreal happening. It's what I live for; sublime moments such as these!

Mark,

Thanks for sharing this photo!  I always look eagerly at each one you post, knowing I'll be rewarded with great scenes!  This one is awesome in its mood and inspiration!  I also very much liked the recent ones of the road disappearing over the hills .... marvelous!  Greetings from Hendersonville!   Mark C.

Terrific, snowy, cloudy, misty, wintery images lately.  Super environment to take advantage of, well done.  rek.

A superb shot - the 'odd orientation' of the trees will consume the viewer (I think)  in a positive or negative way. In my case it was very positive (7)
