I feel that the detail in the background is a little too dark - what

do you think? How could I make it lighter without ruining the rest of

the picture? Thoughts? Thanks....

Jennifer, if this is a daytime photo, then yes, the foreground is too dark, and I think the rest of the photo is too dark as well.

If you're using photoshop, one way that I would lighten the foreground snow is to make a copy of this photo in a new layer, lighten just that layer, then mask the layer and use the gradient tool to merge the two layers together.  You end up with the top half consisting of the "old" photo and the lower half consisting of the "new" (lightened) photo.  I know that's a lot of mumble-jumble words, but the gradient tool can be your friend in these situations -- get to know it.
