A fortunate capture, as with your other shot. It is always the way, just when you least expect it.  You managed to get some fine detail in most of the ducks. Amazing how the birds migrate.  Have you ever seen the movie "Winged Migration"?  If not, you have to rent it and just sit back and enjoy. It's a Sony Pictures Classic, and the Cinematograpy just blows you away. Birds certainly are amazing creatures.  We used to have a boat in one of the small lakes (Lake Scugog) where we lived on Scugog Island. I still don't mind photographing Canada Geese, but they are Prolific in our small lakes and parks.

The Geese thought that our 'swim platform' was the perfect place to use as a 'poop-deck'.....   :-{  .... It would be great if our parks where so many tourists visit, would hire young students to be 'pooper scoopers' during the summer months. Quite often there are so many Geese, the water has too much E-coli, for safe swimming. We are now in Peterborough Ontario, and we have the same problem here.  Lots of mallards enjoy our rivers and small lakes also.  I've never quite managed to capture 'birds in flight' so kudos to you for just seizing the 'moment'...most sincerely, Gail

Nelson,

I like the deep DOF, color's and shadows on the ice in this one, even as busy as it is, . . . it show's movement in numbers!

Thanks for sharing!

Regards,

Jim j.

Hi Nelson, I love the colors here.  You could get another interesting image by just cropping it to the birds, shadows and ice.

Since the image is a bit soft, I would suggest a faster shutter speed. 1/250th is a bit slow for birds in flight. Try up near 1/1000th or faster.  You can crank up the ISO to 400 or 800 to compensate and still keep the f8 setting if you want all of the dof.
