Nick, I am surprised you would want to make this so dark that I cannot tell anything about it.  I like it much better at close to a realistic b/w scale.  If you want to do a low-key image remember that at least a few light to nearly white tones should be present to inhance the darker ones.

Jerry, thank you very much for commenting on my photo. I truly appreciate you took you time...
I fully understand and agree with your point regarding low key photography but the idea behind this work is slightly different and required a more radical approach. Here I tried to communicate to the sub-consciousness specifically the human fear of the unknown. I have long found that the scariest creature a master of horror can create on the silver screen is incomparably pale next to what my subconscious fears can produce.
You wake up from a nightmare... but are you awake.. there is something in the dark.. it perhaps looks like someone you know but it surely cant be... she is long dead... the face is so distorted... is it a face... are those eyes or just gapping holes... why is she here... you are sweating, your heart is pumping.. you reach for the light....... and you realize its your sleepy little daughter that came to ask for a glass of water in the middle of the night!
I tried to illustrate what I mean with this thought stream. Bringing light (and therefore more clarity) to this work removes a big part of the spectator’s room for personal interpretation.
This started off as a completely uninteresting photo of a medieval sculpture in a museum (which I am attaching). Looking at it later at home I started thinking about the person depicted... was she loved... hated... did she love... hate.. did someone grieve her... and out of there my thoughts came to Poe's muse Lenore and her appearances during the dark long nights... and that became guidance till this final result.
I hope that I somewhat clarified my motives and once again thank you very much for you observations!

Jerry moment when he totally misses the point of the art! lol Hey Jerry... a huanted house with all the lights on wouldn't get many paying customers would it? Or perhaps a horror film with no blood... lol
