Tom,

What AF drive mode are you using? Would it possibly be AI Focus, with multiple focus points selected?

To me, the Bufflehead looks a little soft whilst the trailing water splashes appear sharp. I see it was shot @ f/7.1 which I would have thought would have provided enough DOF for the Bufflehead to appear sharper as well.

Just my observations, and they are worth very little!
