Since the earliest times of human settlement of Indonesia, her seashave been the natural lanes of migration, communication and commerce. Not surprisingly, today’s inhabitants of the Archipelago inherit theperhaps most sophisticated maritime tradition of our World; and, itwas this bequest of seafaring and trade that unified the immensediversity of people and customs of more than 17.000 islands into acultural zone once known as the Malay World, which mellowed into themodern nation of Indonesia.

At present, despite modernisation, there still are several hundredof Phinisi vessels trading between the islands of the Maluku and thebigger ports in Java and Sulawesi. In today’s ever changing world theyat least help a tad in preserving some fragments of one of ourPlanet’s salient maritime traditions.

Thank you!

Lovely editing Anabela in this shot.  Impressive and bold, moody sky, and great attention to detail has made for a very beautiful addition to your Portfolio. Congrats on your efforts and thankyou for adding the History of this vessel.  Makes for so much better viewing ! Sincere regards, Gail

Now I have to say you did a really great job in the post process did not think you could slip this one by me right... In Documentary and not in Arch... I think you did a nice process not sure I suspect you did some filters and overlays with some use of the overlay change to get the sky effect to blacken out the blue and kick the whites in the clouds... I like the shot it is very close to the work I do for some reason you may be following me... I am not sure but sure seems that way.. All in all it deserves a 7 and that is what I am giving it. MJ

Seems I have a shot similar to this one... Let me see if I can find it but the port is JKT.

Compliments Anabela, this is really fine work from the initial scene to the final pp result. One of your very best imho. Funny enough I see these traditional Buginese Schooners for the second time in a week here on PN ( the other was MJ Orgeron’s). These majestic Phinisi look all a bit weathered but nonetheless  they are fine pieces of solid traditional boat-building with an extraordinary aesthetic tradition. Thank you for sharing these wonderful vessels and for ‘opening up old wounds’…

Thanks everyone for visiting and leaving your thoughts. It's very much appreciated!

MJ, following one's expertise is always the right choice...;) on the pp work it was close to what you said, overlays layers and colour adjustment in LAB mode...Your b/w photo posted here is splendid...I am flattered by the compliment...it seems that both of us fell in love with Bugis vessels uniqueness...thanks...

El, indeed, seeing the wonderful MJ Orgeron's images of these unique vessels gave rise to do something appealing with mine and share, here on PN, the rich ancestral tradition of Buginese Schooners. Thank you for your all too kind words to me!

Like I noted before I thought the work was just very well presented and the depth of the image and tone is just perfection... Well you get a chance would like to see more of your shots in the area... I have to admit it is a strong admiration of the ships that always draw me back.  I did have to note that there are small differences in the vessels in Makasa, Jakarta, etc.  I think I have an Indo mate on PN that has some ships also with minor changes, so now I am curious to the variations in design of the ships... So more detail from you would help... Keep posting I will continue to comment... As always your dear friend in think and thin... MJ
